Global steel output estimate up

World 2006 steel output has revised up to 1.2442 billion tones from a previous figure of 1.2170 billion, the International Iron and Steel Institute research group said.

The latest estimate is up 9 per cent from a revised figure of 1.1419 billion tones for 2005.

In 2006 the five major steel producing countries were China with 422.7 million tones, Japan at 116.2 million, the US 98.6 million, Russia 70.8 million and South Korea 48.5 million, the IISI said on its website.
