H1 stainless steel production down

Global stainless crude steel output fell 26.7 per cent in the first half of 2009, but signs of recovery in the second quarter show recovery may be starting, the International Stainless Steel Forum said in a report. Total global production for the first half was 10.8 million tonnes, down by more than a quarter versus the same period in 2008, with all major regions showing lower production volumes, the forum, ISSF said. Only China reported an increased production volume during the period. Chinese stainless steel production rose 5.3 per cent to 4.1 million tonnes in the first half, the ISSF said. Stainless steel production in Asia, excluding China, dropped 34 per cent to 3 million tonnes in the first half of this year. Production in Western Europe and Africa fell 40.5 per cent in the first six months of 2009 to 2.9 million tonnes from 4.9 million tonnes during the same period in 2008. Production in the Americas region dropped 40.6 per cent to 0.8 million tonnes, the report showed.
