Shrinking supplies and firm demand from china have propelled cadmium prices to 18-years highs around $4 pound this week, compared with around $3 last month, traders said. Cadmium, used for making batteries, has more than doubled in price since last October when the problem with supplies became apparent. These are the highest price since 1989. There doesn’t appear to be any material around. China is buying aggressively and Indian demand is getting bigger, said a London based trader. Cadmium is by-product of zinc. Leading cadmium producers include Canada-based Teck Cominco, Korea Zinc and Grupo Mexico.
