The global zinc market will be in a 260,000 tonne surplus in 2009, the International Lead and Zinc Study Group said Thursday. The group forecasts global demand will fall by 4.9 per cent in 2009 to 10.92 million tonnes, the largest reduction since 1975. Global refined production is forecast to decrease by 4 per cent to 11.18 million tonnes in 2009 as a result of cutbacks, closures and start up delays announced in the past six months, ILZSG said.
