Requests for steel import up in US

Applications to import the steel into the US rose about 5 percent in March led by China, an industry group said. Overseas trading partner asked to bring 2.82 million tonnes of steel into the US up from 2.69 million in February, the American Iron and steel institute said in an e-mailed statement. Some US steel makers claim Chinese rivals receive illegal state subsidies. March was the 10th consecutive month that China was one of the two biggest foreign suppliers of steel to the US, requesting permits for about 3, 68,000 tonnes, the Institute said.
