Copper production fell 42,000 tonnes short of demand last year, equal to less than 1 per cent of global demand, the International Copper Study Group said. That compares with a surplus of 2,87,000 tonnes in 2006, the Lisbon-based group said. Consumption rose 6.6 per cent to 18.2 million tonnes, led by China, the world's largest user of the metal, the ICSG said. China's net imports jumped 134 per cent to about 1.4 mt last year, the group said. Demand fell 3.3 per cent in the US, European Union and Japan, the ICSG said.
