The identification system was introduced by the Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc., which provides a uniform system for the identification of different polymer types and helps recycling companies to separate different plastics for reprocessing. Shown below are the OIC codes for 7 different plastics Polyethylene Terephthalate – “PET” and/or “1” High Density Polyethylene – “PE-HD” and/or “2” Polyvinyl Chloride – “PVC” and/or “3” Polypropylene – “PP” and/or “4” Polystyrene – “PS” and/or “06” Others (often polycarbonate or ABS)- “O” and/or “07” Plastic recycling, plastic identification numbers, plastic scrap
