FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (NNS) - Navy and Army divers, and a joint transportation and logistical support team, spent the month of April, including Earth Day, recovering tires off the ocean floor in Fort Lauderdale. This two-month project, which began April 3, is part of a three-year initiative that aims to remove 725,000 tires from the ocean floor. To date, divers have been recovering approximately 1,600 tires a day. "It's exciting that the premise of this project promotes a joint effort involving both Army and Navy divers," said Army 1st Lt. Scott Sann. "It's an opportunity to share knowledge and work towards a common goal, and the esprit de corps that is fostered within the team pumps everyone up." It's estimated that nearly two-million tires were placed into the ocean in the 1970's by private organizations hoping to create an artificial reef.
