Zinc demand to exceed output

Teck Comnico Ltd, the world’s second largest zinc producer, said global demand for the metal used to galvanize steel will exceed production this year. Essentially it is going to be a balanced market but we are forecasting a small deficit, Mr. Mike Agg, vice president of metal sales at Vancouver-based Teck Cominco, said on a conference call with investors. Increased output by China, the world’s biggest producer will be used by the western world he said. China will remain a net exporter of the metal as production exceeds domestic consumption, he said. The country becomes a net exporter in 2006 for the first time in three years.
