Global zinc market in surplus

The world zinc market was in a 72,000 tonne surplus between January and March 2008, the International Lead and Zinc Study Group said on Wednesday. Global refined zinc production of 2.839 million tonnes outstripped consumption of refined zinc of 2.767 million tonnes. The surplus is larger than the one posted in the same period for 2007 of 59,000 tonnes. Western world refined zinc consumption, on the other hand, outstripped production by 59,000 tonnes with production at 1.688 million tonnes and consumption at 1.747 million tonnes.
